It's the first question almost everyone asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you need. Two websites that look similar can be priced very differently because of what's behind them. This guide explains what changes the price, the running costs people forget to budget for, and the questions worth asking any web designer before you sign anything.
What changes the price
- The number of pages. A five-page site for a local trade is a very different job from a 30-page site with services, case studies and a blog.
- Template or designed for you. Templates are quicker and cheaper, but you'll look like everyone else using the same one. A bespoke design takes longer and fits your business.
- Selling online. A shop needs products, a checkout, delivery rates, VAT settings and order emails, so it costs more than a brochure site.
- Words and photos. If you write the copy and supply photos yourself, the price stays down. If you need writing or photography, budget for it.
- Extras. Bookings, memberships, integrations with other software and moving an old site across all add time.
The running costs to budget for
The build is a one-off cost, but every website has a few ongoing ones too:
- Your domain name: a small yearly fee to keep your web address.
- Hosting: what keeps the site online. Prices depend on the platform and whether you need a blog or a shop.
- Updates and support: optional, but useful if you'd rather someone else made changes and kept an eye on speed and SEO.

Questions to ask any web designer
- Is the price fixed? Get it in writing before work starts.
- Who owns the website and the domain? They should be in your name, not the designer's.
- What's included? Check for mobile design, SEO basics and training.
- Can I update it myself? If every change needs the designer, the real cost keeps rising.
- What will I pay each year? Ask for hosting, domain and support costs up front.
- Who actually builds it? Find out whether the work stays with the people you speak to or is passed on to someone else.
