WordPress runs a huge share of the world's websites, and for good reason. So why do we build every site in Webflow? Here's an honest look at both, including when WordPress is the better choice.
How they differ
WordPress is open-source software. You (or your web designer) choose where to host it, pick a theme, and add features with plugins. That gives you enormous choice, but it also means you're responsible for keeping everything updated and secure.
Webflow is a hosted platform. The design tool, the content editor and the hosting all come from one company, so there's no separate software to install or patch.
Maintenance and security
A typical WordPress site relies on several plugins, plus a theme and the core software. Each needs updating regularly, and an out-of-date plugin is one of the most common ways sites get broken or hacked. Someone has to keep on top of it.
Webflow sites don't use plugins, and hosting, security certificates and backups are handled by Webflow. For most small businesses, that simply means fewer things to worry about.
Editing your own website
In WordPress, how easy editing is depends on the theme and page builder your site uses. Some are simple, some are confusing.
In the Webflow Editor you click on the page as it really looks and change the text or swap an image. There's no separate admin screen to learn, which is why we can train clients in a single session.
Cost
WordPress itself is free, and basic hosting can be cheap. But premium plugins, themes, security tools and someone's time to run updates all add up. Webflow charges a hosting plan depending on whether you need a blog or a shop, and there's far less to maintain on top. We'll always tell you the hosting cost before you commit.
When WordPress is the better choice
- You need a specific plugin or integration that Webflow can't offer.
- You're running a very large online shop with complex stock, pricing or fulfilment needs.
- You have an in-house developer who already maintains WordPress sites.
When Webflow is the better choice
- You want a fast, secure site without plugins to keep updating.
- You'd like to make your own changes without breaking the design.
- You want the site in your own account, with no lock-in to a designer.
That describes most of the small businesses we speak to, which is why we build in Webflow. Already on WordPress, Wix or Squarespace? We can move your site to Webflow and set up redirects so you keep the Google rankings you've built.
